James Earl Jones, who has voiced Darth Vader for 45 years, is saying goodbye. The legendary actor, who is now 91 years old, recently informed Disney that he \”was looking into winding up this character.\” This forced Disney to ask themselves how they could possibly replace Jones. Disney’s answer, which was based on an AI program, was chosen with the actor’s consent.

Respeecher’s work is featured in the latest Star Wars series. Respeecher is a Ukrainian startup which uses archived recordings and an \”proprietary AI algorithm to create new dialogue with the voices of performers from long ago.\” For Jones, they worked with Lucasfilm in order to recreate the voice of Darth Vader as it sounded back when the film audience first heard him in 1977.
