Scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory successfully demonstrated autonomous methods to discover new materials. The AI-driven technique, which was used to discover three new nanostructures including the first of its kind nanoscale \”ladder,\” has been published in Science Advances.

Self-assembly is a method that allows molecules to form unique patterns. Scientists from Brookhaven’s Center for Functional Nanomaterials are experts in directing self-assembly, creating templates for material to form desired arrangements for applications such as microelectronics and catalysis. The discovery of a nanoscale ladder, as well as other new structures, has expanded the applications of self-assembly.
