ClearBuds: Deep Learning-Enabled Wireless Earbuds for Clearer Calls

Deep learning is used to clear calls on the first wireless earbuds
Many people reported that loud noises such as garbage trucks, chattering rooms, and other loud sounds were disrupting important conversations when meetings were moved online during COVID-19’s lockdown.

Three University of Washington researchers who shared a room during the pandemic were inspired to create better earbuds. ClearBuds use a new microphone system to enhance the speaker’s sound and reduce background noise. They run on smartphones and are one of the world’s first machine-learning programs that operate in real time.

Researchers presented this project at the ACM International Conference on Mobile Systems, Applications, and Services on June 30, 2010.
