Exploring the ‘Ghost Ships’ with Robot Dogs and Drones: 3D Mapping with Laser-based Sensors

Robot Dogs and Drones 3D mapping ‘Ghost Ships with Laser-based Sensors

Sounds like a sci-fi movie right? It’s not. The Naval Surface Warfare Center’s Philadelphia Division is currently testing laser-based sensor technology on robots or drones to assess battle damage, perform repairs, install equipment, and modernize systems remotely.

Engineers and scientists from NSWCPD’s Advanced Data Acquiring Prototyping Technologies Virtual Environments (ADAPT.VE), are testing new applications of light detection and ranging to build 3D models on the’mothballed fleet’ of decommissioned ships in the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
