Japan Coast Guard begins flight operations with MQ-9B SeaGuardian UAV

Japan receives Hawkeyes and begins operations with SeaGuardian

MELBOURNE (Australia) — The Japanese Coast Guard is now operating with the newly delivered MQ-9B SeaGuardian, and more early warning airborne aircraft have been brought into the country via ship.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (the UAV manufacturer) announced in a press release that the Coast Guard began flight operations on October 19 with a SeaGuardian at the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Hachinohe Air Station.

The American company stated that the unmanned high-altitude aircraft with long endurance \”will primarily conduct Maritime Wide Area Search over the Sea of Japan or the Pacific Ocean.\” Search and rescue missions, disaster response and maritime law enforcement will also be included.
