Gravity signals and machine learning can detect large earthquakes quickly

Earthquakes that are large enough to cause a major shift in the Earth’s gravitational fields make adjustments at speeds of light. Researchers have now trained computers to recognize these tiny gravitational signal, showing how they can be used almost instantly to mark the size and location of a strong earthquake.

Scientists report in Nature on May 11, that it’s the first step towards creating an early warning system of Earth’s strongest quakes.

Andrea Licciardi is a geophysicist from the Universite Cote d’Azur, Nice, France. She says that such a system would help solve a difficult problem in seismology. It’s difficult to issue warnings quickly and effectively without this capability.
