Robot Dogs Help Manage Ancient Pompeii

Robot dog to assist in Pompeii

Spot, a four-legged robot, has been sent to the ancient Pompeii ruins to identify structural and safety problems. It also goes underground to inspect tunnels that relic thieves have dug.

The robot, which looks like a dog, is part of a larger project to improve management of the archaeological park. Since 2013, when Unesco warned that Pompeii would be added to the list of endangered world heritage sites unless Italian authorities improved the preservation of the site.
