‘AI Bumblebees’: These robots act like bees to pollinate tomato plants
The AI-powered robot, named \”Polly\”, will pollinate truss tomatoes in Costa’s tomato greenhouse facilities in Guyra (New South Wales).
Costa’s website states that in its commercial application these robotic pollinators drive between rows of flowers, use artificial intelligence to detect those that are ready for pollination, and then emit pulses of air that vibrate the flower in a way that mimics buzz-pollination carried out by bees.
Pollination robots can provide future farmers a significant advantage over insects like bees and human laborers who are sometimes required to assist with the growth of certain crops. They could improve productivity.
